Childcare cost calculator
Turn an hourly childcare quote and weekly schedule into a base-cost estimate. Compare scenarios such as fewer hours or a different hourly rate, using the same 52-paid-week assumption each time.
Base hourly care only: hours × rate × 52 paid weeks. This is not a payroll, overtime or tax-credit calculator. It does not estimate current local childcare prices. Inputs stay in your browser.
Build a comparable childcare estimate
- Enter the number of paid care hours in a typical week.
- Enter the hourly rate that applies to those hours. Use your provider's quote, not a guessed market average.
- Compare weekly base cost, annual base cost and the monthly average. Change one input at a time to see its effect.
This version assumes the same hours and rate for all 52 paid weeks. If you pay only during a school term, have unpaid breaks or different holiday arrangements, its annual estimate will not match that contract. For a fixed weekly daycare fee, compare that fee with the weekly result; do not infer an hourly rate unless the covered hours are known.
Worked example: 40 hours at $25 an hour
40 hours × $25 = $1,000 per week. At 52 paid weeks, that is $52,000 a year, or $4,333.33 per month on average. Using four weeks per month would understate this annualized cost because 12 four-week periods cover only 48 weeks.
The monthly figure is a budgeting average, not an invoice forecast. Actual monthly bills depend on the provider's billing schedule.
Methodology and costs to check separately
Weekly base cost = weekly paid hours × hourly rate. Annual base cost = weekly base cost × 52. Average monthly base cost = annual base cost ÷ 12. Results are displayed to the nearest cent without rounding intermediate calculations.
Registration fees, transportation, meals, extra children, paid leave, backup care and rate changes are not added automatically. If some hours have a different rate or overtime premium, this single-rate calculation does not capture that difference.
Employing a caregiver in your home can involve household-employment tax responsibilities. Classification and obligations depend on the facts; this calculator does not determine them or add employer taxes. See the IRS Household Employer's Tax Guide and check applicable state and local requirements. No dependent-care credit, account reimbursement or subsidy is deducted here.
Use the estimate in your household budget
Compare complete quotes with the same paid-hours and paid-weeks assumptions. Add omitted costs before using the number in the one-income household planner. A lower base estimate does not evaluate a caregiver's quality, reliability or suitability.
