Compound Your Future
← Home & Big Purchases

Your budget. Your priorities.

A renovation you like. A budget you keep.

Compare your material quotes as part of the whole project. Tell us how much aesthetics, durability and ease of maintenance matter to you, then see which entered options fit both your preferences and your hard budget.

Fictional examples, not retail prices or product ratings. The $30,000 budget, quotes and scores below illustrate the calculation only. Replace every relevant input with your own numbers. No prices, material lifespan, availability, suitability or contractor quality have been verified.

1. Set the whole-project hard cap

These are three alternatives, not purchases to add together. Each total includes one quote plus the same other-project-cost reserve, then your contingency. Include all remaining project costs you intend to cover with this budget in that reserve; otherwise the project total is incomplete. The calculator does not increase your budget to make an option fit.

2. Set what matters to you

Importance is a relative weight, not a minimum acceptable product score. Zero ignores that attribute; 10 gives it more influence. Aesthetics 8 and durability 8 give those two priorities equal influence. All zero means no preference ranking.

3. Enter comparable quotes and your own scores

Use the same intended scope and a clear quantity unit for every alternative. You may compare different quantities only if you deliberately want to compare different scopes. Include any additional material quantity in your entered total quantity; no waste allowance is added automatically.

Quote inputs are in US dollars. Enter a tax amount from the quote, not a tax rate. The tool does not calculate legal tax liability. If a unit price or labor figure already includes tax, delivery, removal or another item, do not enter it twice. For a bundled quote, quantity 1 with unit “bundle” and the quoted bundle price can work; separately entered components must exclude anything already included.

All attribute scores are yours: 0 means low preference fit and 10 high preference fit. For maintenance, a higher score means easier or more acceptable care to you. Durability / longevity is your assessment, not a prediction of years of life. Do not enter a material you consider unsuitable just because it is cheap.

Before relying on a quote

No retailer or contractor is ranked or endorsed. There are no purchase or affiliate links in this calculator. You may obtain quotes from sources of your choice; no account, upload or purchase is required.

How the comparison works

Materials = total quantity × unit price, rounded once to the nearest cent. Quote subtotal = materials + labor + removal / disposal + delivery / extras + the entered tax amount. Project base subtotal = quote subtotal + other project costs. Contingency = project base subtotal × your selected percentage, rounded to the nearest cent. All-in total = project base subtotal + contingency. Headroom = hard budget − all-in total. Half-cent ties round upward.

Preference fit /10 = (aesthetics score × aesthetics importance + durability score × durability importance + ease-of-maintenance score × maintenance importance) ÷ sum of importance weights. Scores and importance weights are whole numbers from 0 to 10. Results show two decimals, but rankings and ties use the unrounded weighted numerator. Affordable ranks use competition ranking: a tie for rank 1 is followed by rank 3. With all weights zero, scores and preference ranks are unavailable; cost totals still work.

Quotes over the cap are excluded from affordable ranking, even if they have the highest preference fit. Relative weights are not minimum quality thresholds. You can change both your importance weights and your own quote-specific scores; the ranking and next steps update. Importance of 7 or higher prompts a relevant verification reminder, not a product standard.

Money, quantities and contingency accept up to two decimal places. Quantity is limited to 100,000; each money input other than the hard cap is limited to $1 million; the hard cap to $100 million; contingency to 0–100%. These are software limits, not suggested spending. Zero quantity produces zero material cost, not necessarily zero project cost. All inputs must use one currency; no exchange conversion or price feed is provided.

The result only covers the costs you enter. No material-price database, predicted lifespan, resale return, suitability assessment, contractor recommendation, financing recommendation or claim of being the first or only such tool is provided.
